I first discovered Playmobil in 1994, when a teacher had one of the medieval houses on display in our classroom. Even as a youngster, it caught my imagination with its quality, detail, and absence of pre-made background story or explanation; it was up to me to make up and explain what it all was. Fast forward a couple of years to 1996 and I finally came across a store in my state that sold playmobil, and I was so excited (if not sad that I didn't have more money at the time). I could afford 2 Specials--4512 ("Heavy Metal" guitarist) and 4530 (sorceress with snake). I would stare at every page in the mini catalogs every day. Animals had always been a favorite subject of mine, and those by Playmobil were (and still are) superior in variety, quality, and consistency. After I saved up for a while, I bought a few sets with animals and loved them. Likewise, as you can imagine from my first two purchases, I loved the figures straight away. I can't think of any set or theme I don't love, but I have to limit my collecting, as I only have so much space! I still collect the animals along with the Fi?ures series, which has become my new favorite...taking my love of Specials to the next level. I find myself constantly daydreaming new ideas for Fi?ures; will do my best to start sketching out some ideas and posting them on this site! I've known the brand and its DNA for many years now, and it continues to keep me excited as an adult.
This is another rushed drawing, so my apologies again!
My idea here was to make a spider-like woman. I was inspired by some of the other Playmobil figures that have the spider web design, and also a Lego toy I saw a while back (which is very similar to this design). The idea is that the Fi?ure (which has…Continue
I haven't posted any ideas in a while, so I felt long overdue (I still have hundreds of ideas I just haven't put on paper yet). I drew this in a hurry (less than 5 minutes) - I didn't even do a sketch first, just drew what was in my head (so excuse the low quality). Likewise, excuse the poor picture quality - I don't have access to a scanner today, so I just used my old webcam.…Continue
While "celebrity" Fi?ures aren't necessarily my favorite, Elvis was quirky enough for me to really like. I thought something that was iconic, but could still be any character within children's imagination was the way to go, so I decided on Marilyn Monroe. I tried to recreate her white dress from that famous scene in which a subway vent blows it up and she has to hold it down. For the bottom, I used the same skirt the series 2 fairy has (since it has the impression of movement), and the torso…Continue
I really like the special figure that members were sent – the white knight. I also really liked the idea of using the typically “princess” figure found in every Fi?ures series in a new and creative way – particularly the idea of a chess queen stood out to me. The white knight figure inspired the color scheme – all white. The only thing she needed was the right crown, so I drew something that looks like the top of a queen chess piece.…Continue
